Check mark is used to mark “yes”, “approved”, “correct”, “completed”, or “I chose this” inside a checkbox. Sometimes it is used to choose items on a checklist or to check them as done. Though 🗸-type mark is used usually, x mark is another type of checkmark also sometimes used for this purpose.

How do I type a checkmark?

Hold down the Alt key and use the number keypad to enter the character code–that’s 0252 for the plain checkmark and 0254 for the boxed checkmark. Word will display an odd character (Figure F) to display the checkmark. (You might need to press Num Lock on your keyboard.)
